Treatment Spotlight: Dermafrac

We all love talking about the results from a spectacular facial, but what about the facial itself? Lee, our social media manager, puts herself at the hands of the Me Skin and Body experts to talk about what its actually like the get one of our specialised treatments. This month - Dermafrac.

Like microdermabrasion, Dermafrac is all about the tool - in this case, a revolving head of micro needles which are pulled gently into the skin using suction. These ‘micro traumas’ just below the dermal-epidermal layer encourage the body to mend by bringing collagen to the area, which of course results in a definite re-plumping and re-toning. Topical infusions will also go deeper, making the area more receptive to beneficial actives. Sound a little intense? It is, but in all the best kind of ways - Dermafrac gives dramatic results to issues like sun spots, thickened or dull skin, acne scarring and hyperpigmentation, in a way that few other treatments can compare with.

For me in particular, I was interested in breaking up some of the hyper pigmentation acne had left me over the years, which covers my lower cheeks and jaws. Given Kate’s experience with my skin at this stage, she chose to use the deeper option - 0.5mm - for the majority of areas.

The skin is prepped with a cleanse and given a customised peel to ensure the skin being worked on is fresh and clear. At this point I am practically dozing, as my skin is now so used to the gentle nip of the peel I am more enjoying being snuggled down, but that is quickly interrupted when the dermafrac begins!

The micro needles are exactly that - micro - so don’t imagine any enormous puncture marks just yet! While hundreds of these tiny needles might be running over your face, in the hands of a MSB expert the sensation isn’t so much pain as it is irritation. Like slapping at a mosquito or itching your skin when you’ve walked through long grass, dermafrac is such an active sensation, I found myself instinctively flinching, especially around the eye area. Kate tells me she will often also have clients sneeze when doing the nose!

Thanks to her confidence and distracting chat, however, the worst is soon over, and the sensation does not linger. Instead, my face was red and hot, definitely not two things I am used to post-treatment with my non reactive skin! My face was then soothed with a post laser treatment, full of hydration and nourishment, and protected with SPF. Sent on my way, the redness was calm within an hour for me, but may linger a little longer for more sensitive skin.

Like many heavy weight treatments, I’m placed on an active-ban for my skincare for a few days, focusing instead on nourishing and protecting (Dermaquests Peptide facial booster was a total hero!). My skin was drier than usual, and tight, for the following 48 hours, and sucked up whatever was applied, so I switched to mineral foundation to ensure it was kept clear and given only skin-positive options. After this dryness, however, came incredible radiance. Not only was the pigmentation softened as I’d hoped, but my entire under eye and upper cheek area was toned and brilliantly clear.

My final thoughts: Definitely worth the application irritation for the most dramatic pigmentation obliteration. Dermafrac features in this months Winter Wonderland treatment package for a good reason - It packs a punch! I’m looking forward to my next treatment to keep up the good work and knock over that pesky pigmentation once and for all.
